1 dead in SEPTA train, car crash in snowstorm in Lower Moreland
A preliminary investigation indicates the car went through the crossing gates and hit the fourth car of the train.
In a possibly weather-related accident, a passenger in an SUV was killed when it crashed into a SEPTA train in Montgomery County during Thursday morning's snowstorm, authorities said.
The vehicle occupied by the victim and a driver was heading west on Red Lion Road in Lower Moreland just after 9:40 a.m. when it broke through a train-crossing gate and hit a West Trenton Line train heading toward Center City, authorities said.
The driver was able to exit the vehicle before the crash. It was not known why the passenger remained in the vehicle. Her body was found outside the vehicle, next to the tracks.
The SUV struck the last car of a four-car train. None of the 50 passengers on the train was injured.
The cause of the crash was under investigation by Lower Moreland and SEPTA police.
SEPTA spokesman Andrew Busch said icy conditions on the road may have contributed to the crash.
The train stopped at the next station, Bethayres, and was later taken out of service to be inspected. The passengers were transferred by shuttle bus to Jenkintown.
Service was not resumed on the West Trenton Line until 1:30 p.m.
