Norristown man charged in Lancaster hit-run school bus crash

James P. Irvin III, 46, of Norristown was driving on a suspended license, police said.

A Norristown man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash last week involving a school bus full of children in Lancaster County that left at least 15 people injured.

James P. Irvin III, 46, surrendered to police on Wednesday. He is charged with multiple counts of leaving the scene of the May 17 accident with injuries, driving on a suspended license and other related crimes. He was remanded to the Lancaster County jail after failing to immediately post $100,000 bail, the Lancaster District Attorney's Office reported.

Irvin was later released on bail, LancasterOnline reported. No attorney of record was listed on public records.

According to the district attorney's office Irvin, who has been staying at his parent's home in Lancaster Township for a few months, was driving a white Chevy Malibu east on Route. 30 when he allegedly attempted to pass a pair of wide-load tractor-trailers.

During the maneuver,  he veered into the trucks' escort vehicle while attempting to avoid the oncoming school bus. The escort vehicle then crashed into the bus, which struck a tractor trailer and tipped over.

The 14 students and 65-year-old driver were injured. A six-year-old boy remains hospitalized, according to the district attorney's office.

"It's extremely disturbing that somebody could be this callous to drive away and leave these people literally to their fates," district attorney Craig Stedman said at a news conference Wednesday evening, LancasterOnline reported.

"They could've been dead for all he knew or cared," Stedman stated.
