Philadelphia Media Network sweeps Keystone Press Awards

Philadelphia Media Network, parent company of the Inquirer, Daily News, and Philly.com, has been named the 2017 sweepstakes winner in Pennsylvania's top news media contest, the Keystone Press Awards.

Numerous awards also went to individual PMN staffers in the annual competition that recognizes excellence in a variety of writing, editing, photography and design categories. PMN competed in the category for multi-day publications with circulation above 75,000.

The following are the winners and their recognized work:

Barbara Laker, Wendy Ruderman, and Dylan Purcell, first place Investigative Reporting, for their Toxic City series on Philadelphia children poisoned by lead paint.

Amy Rosenberg, first place, Distinguished Writing.

Tom Gralish, second place, Distingushed Visual.

Bob Fernandez, first place, Ongoing News Coverage, for coverage of the Hershey School. Maria Panaritis, second place, for coverage of sex-abuse victims.

Jason Laughlin, Justine McDaniel, and Dylan Purcell, first place, Special Project, for their article  on why SEPTA's Regional Rail trains are late. Stacey Burling, second place, for her article  on aging parents.

Sandra Shea, honorable mention, Editorial.

Alfred Lubrano, first place, Column Writing;  Jason Nark, second place.

Jason Laughlin, Maria Panaritis, Marie McCullough, and Caitlin McCabe, honorable mention, Breaking News, for coverage of April's fatal Amtrak crash in Chester.

Sports staff, second place, Niche Publication, for the Eagles Playbook pregame wrap-around sections.

Sports staff, honorable mention, Sports Event Coverage, for coverage of Flyers founder Ed Snider's death.

Mike Sielski, first place, Sports Story, for his writing on concussions in football players. Aaron Carter, honorable mention, for his article on a high school athlete's suicide.

Jeff Gammage, second place, Feature Story, on adoption match events. Kathy Boccella, honorable mention, for her article on a woman's life after having half her brain removed as a child.

Amy Rosenberg, honorable mention, News Feature, for her article on teenage killers.

Frank Fitzpatrick, honorable mention, Personality Profile, for his piece on the life of a man who was saved from drowning as a child by a man who died in the effort.

Susan Snyder, first place, Business Story, on Drexel University president John Fry. Jacob Adelman, honorable mention, for his article on Philadelphia's transfer taxes.

Jason Laughlin, first place, News Beat Reporting, for coverage of transportation. Susan Snyder, honorable mention, for higher education reporting.

Inga Saffron, first place, Feature Beat Reporting, for architecture critique. Ellen Gray, second place, for television critique.
