An off-duty police officer heading home from work was injured early Saturday in a hit-and-run crash in West Philadelphia, police said.

Just before 5 a.m., the officer, whom police have not identified, was driving north on 46th Street when a gray vehicle ran a red light at Walnut Street, striking the officer's car and causing it to spin out and strike a tree, police said.

The gray car drove west on Walnut with heavy front-end damage, police said.

Paramedics took the officer to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was in stable condition late Saturday, police said.
