"Waterfowl Watch" set for Montco

GREEN LANE Despite the threat of record cold, spring is very much in the air for waterfowl that might be wending their ways back to the Arctic or the Dakotas after wintering in warmer climes.

On their journeys north, Green Lane Park, with three significant bodies of water, is a popular stopover point. So, on Feb. 28, starting at 1 p.m., the public is invited to attend a seasonal "Waterfowl Watch" at the largest park in the county system.

In all, 288 species of birds have been identified in the park, said Kevin Crilley, the park's environmental educator. The event will be held rain, snow, wintry mix, or shine, he said, providing, of course, a blizzard doesn't shut down the roads.

The events during the late-fall and winter migrating seasons typically draw 12 to 20 people, he said.

In years past, observers have seen the likes of tundra swans, cackling geese, northern pintails, and canvasbacks.

Participants are asked to bring binoculars and meet at the tennis court parking lot, at 2298 Green Lane Rd. The program is free and suitable for adults and children from 9 and older.

Participants are asked to preregister at least by the day before the event. To reserve a spot, call 215-234-4528. The e-mail contact is kcrilley@ montcopa.org; the park website is www.montcopa.org/greenlanepark.
