Whitemarsh Township police shot a woman in the hand early Thursday after she pointed a gun at them, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office said.

Whitemarsh Township police shot a woman in the hand early Thursday after she pointed a gun at them, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office said.

The incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. at the Washington Tower Apartments in Fort Washington.

A 911 caller reported that the woman was suicidal and that there was a baby with her in the apartment.

When officers arrived, according to the District Attorney's Office, the woman went into a hallway and pointed a gun at them. After she ignored their instructions to drop the weapon, one of the officers fired a shot, striking her in a hand.

Kevin Steele, first assistant district attorney, said the officers were "not close range - 66 feet" when the shot was fired.

The woman has not been identified.

She was taken to Temple University Hospital, and Steele said she may face criminal charges "as early as tomorrow."

He said he did not know the connection between the woman and the baby, who was unharmed.

The identity of the police officer has not been released. Whitemarsh police referred questions to the District Attorney's Office.
