PLYMOUTH MEETING A workshop hosted by the Montgomery County Foundation next week will explore the role of women in nonprofits.

Although the nonprofit sector tends to focus on justice and social issues, its own employees are not immune to the gender inequity issues often cited as common in American workplaces.

The project was launched by the Bayer Center for Nonprofit Management at Robert Morris University, based in Western Pennsylvania.

It is called the 74 Percent Initiative because women represent 74 percent of the nonprofit workforce and earn 74 percent of what their male counterparts make in the same field, according to the Bayer Center. Women are also underrepresented on the boards and executive positions of nonprofits.

The workshop aims to explore these issues and promote mentoring and leadership training. Peggy Outon, executive director of the Bayer Center, will give the keynote address. Alma Jacobs, former Pennsylvania Secretary of Aging, will receive the Woman of Distinction Award.
