Tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will go up 10 percent on Jan. 1 for motorists who pay with cash, but will remain unchanged for drivers who pay with E-ZPass.

The Turnpike Commission approved the toll hike Tuesday. It will increase revenue by about 3 percent, or $23 million. The increase means the cash toll for a car traveling the 357 miles from Ohio to New Jersey will be $35.50, compared to the E-ZPass toll of $30.17.

The commission on Tuesday also approved toll increases for 2013 and 2014, designed to generate 3 percent more revenue each year. It did not set new toll rates for those years.

About 67 percent of turnpike customers use E-ZPass. Unlike New Jersey, Pennsylvania will not limit the discount to motorists who obtain their E-ZPass device through the home state's E-ZPass program. - Paul Nussbaum
