Hit-and-run driver kills off-duty N.J. officer

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - An off-duty police officer was killed early Saturday when his motorcycle was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Lakewood.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - An off-duty police officer was killed early Saturday when his motorcycle was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Lakewood.

Angelo Vasile, 36, of Beachwood, who served on the Harvey Cedars police force, was riding south on Route 9 when the accident occurred around 3 a.m., said Michael Mohel, deputy chief of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office. Vasile was pronounced dead a short time later at Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood.

The car involved in the collision was abandoned not far away, Mohel said, adding that no arrests had been made. Lakewood police and the Prosecutor's Office were investigating. - AP
