Subway melee hospitalizes 1

A 14-year-old boy remained hospitalized yesterday following a fight between two factions of teens Saturday night on the Broad Street Subway.

According to police, the victim boarded the subway with male and female friends at Broad Street and Allegheny Avenue. Shortly thereafter, about 11:50, another group of teens entered the train at the Susquehanna-Dauphin stop, and a fracas broke out between the two groups, involving as many as 20 people, police said.

The 14-year-old, holding a glass bottle, fell to the ground and was cut on his hand when the bottle broke, police said.

He and his friends got off at the Temple University stop and went to Temple University Hospital, where he was treated for the cut and for a bruised lip, police said.

Later he was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, where he was treated for a concussion, according to Officer Tanya Little, a police spokeswoman.

It was unknown where or when the second group of teens debarked, but the train was stopped at the Fern Rock station where it was processed by police as a crime scene, according to East Detectives.

Police said that they didn't know what sparked the fight and that no one was taken in for interviews or arrested, although the teens with the boy were questioned.
