Because Montgomery County Treasurer Garrett Page won election as a County Court judge Tuesday, it falls to Gov. Rendell to name a replacement.
The appointment could return a familiar face to the county political scene. Former Commissioners Chairman Tom Ellis, 50, said he intended to apply for the interim row-office job.
"Given what's going on with the county budget, they could use some help," Ellis said, alluding to cost-cutting efforts to solve a shortfall.
Under state law, Rendell must appoint a replacement for Page from the same party. Page is a Republican, as is Ellis, whose last political effort was a losing campaign for state treasurer last year. The appointment, which must happen within 30 days after Page is sworn in as judge Jan. 4, is subject to confirmation by two-thirds of the state Senate. - Derrick Nunnally
