Philadelphia police were searching yesterday for a 22-year-old man who they say hit 8-year-old twin girls with a car Tuesday afternoon, leaving one critically injured.
Police said Shawn Timbers, of the 1200 block of Alcott Street, was driving the gray Lincoln Town Car that struck the sisters as they crossed a street in their Crescentville neighborhood.
Timbers faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment.
Kaitlyn Bradfield remained in critical condition yesterday in the intensive care unit at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, said her aunt, Dorothea Ball. The girl has tire tracks on her torso, a broken leg, a broken arm, and a distended stomach, relatives said.
Eryca Bradfield has minor injuries and was home from the hospital yesterday.
"She misses her sister," Ball said. "They never like to leave each other's side, and Eryca knows her sister is hurting."
Mary Anne McIntyre, the girls' mother, said yesterday that her daughter's condition hadn't improved.
"Everyone in the family is so upset," she said. "This is so awful for us."
The sisters were hit around 3:40 p.m. after Ball dropped them off at their home at the end of a day off from school. The girls headed to a store at Cheltenham Avenue and Colgate Street, where they often went to buy treats, and were crossing Colgate when the car struck them.
"Who did they hurt?" Ball said. "All they wanted to do was get some candy."
The accident drew a crowd, including Franklin Rosario, who works at the corner store. "I ran outside when I heard the noise," he said. "I saw her on the ground, heard her crying. Eight years old. It's terrible."
Witnesses chased the car as it drove away, jotting down the license-plate number to give to police.
Though the car was soon found several blocks away, the driver had fled, presumably on foot, police said. Timbers is not the owner of the car, police said, but apparently had permission to drive it.
An investigator said police were searching several possible addresses for Timbers.
He has been arrested several times in recent years on drug, aggravated-assault, and various other charges. Some of those charges were withdrawn, and others dismissed because of a lack of prosecution, court records show.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Police Department's accident investigations unit at 215-685-3180.
