Karen Heller: In Pennsylvania, we're No. 50!

Once brazen in its mediocrity, Pennsylvania has now distinguished itself by being late or last in almost everything.

Why run in the middle of the pack when you can be 50th? The commonwealth may finally get table games, just as the industry implodes.

We're rich in natural gas, but behind everyone in taxing an industry projected to gush jobs and revenue.

The state with the largest and most expensive full-time legislature was last in the nation to pass a budget. Cause and effect? While legislators dithered, ailing social services went into financial comas.

Our politicians have become so accustomed to serving lobbyists and big donors, like natural gas companies, they've forgotten that they were elected to pass laws and budgets. Or create additional revenue.

Less, you want less? Pennsylvania turns out to be the least-stimulated place in the country!

The state ranks 50th in creating new jobs from the $787 billion federal stimulus program, according to a government report released last week: 12 positions for every 10,000 workers. More total jobs were created in tiny Connecticut.

Consider far-flung and frozen North Dakota. Even with the nation's lowest unemployment rate of 4.2 percent, that state boasts a new job-creation rate three times that of Pennsylvania, which has 8.8 percent unemployment.

The stimulus money was supposed to be manna from heaven. Instead, it has revealed the divine incompetence in City Hall.

No one's minding the recovery. Philadelphia applied for $310 million and was approved for $157 million, but so far has received only $13.6 million.

What has it spent? Only $700,000, A-Rod's salary for five games.

Administrators have been so busy worrying and cutting that they've done a lousy job of collecting and spending.

The trick to life is expectation management. The reason many of us are consistently disappointed is that we expect too much. Anticipate the first-game World Series Phils, and your hopes will be dashed by some guys who semi-resemble a team, one that considers guarding third base an afterthought.

Of course, people expect far more of athletes than their government. Folks, low expectations have brought us to this moment. When you don't expect much of anything but from your sports teams, you'll never be disappointed. But you get the government you deserve. You're rewarded with a septic tank of hackery, more of the undistinguished same. At least now, we can brag about the ignominy of being last.

Why is North Dakota creating jobs? I believe they stop Liberals at the border up there.

Not that I think you are interested in facts, p.e. people, but just in case - North Dakota is the only state with a state owned bank, the Bank of North Dakota in Bismarck, and a state owned flour mill, the North Dakota Mill and Elevator in Grand Forks. If you're interested in why they are creating jobs, it's because they have oil and a booming wind energy sector.

North Dakota also has lower taxes & doesn't penalize most businesses. In PA, as you noted, some businesses (those with lobbyists in Harrisburg & Phila.) get special favors. The rest have to deal with bureaucracy, over-regulation, over-taxation, and subsidized competition.

Good article. Not sure if the sports references were relevant or necessary...but good article. This city and state need to keep being exposed for what they are and what they do/don't do. Keep up the good work Karen.

When will we stop complaining and get rid of the lifelong politicians who only serve themselves?

KUTCH507, next year is our chance. By then, we will have the dozen trials or guilty pleas in the first round of the Bonus Scandal to refresh our memories. And with any luck, we'll have the chance for a referendum on a Constitution convention next fall. The first step, though, is to find good people to throw into office when we throw the bad ones out. It's not too early to think about restoring competition to our elections, one candidate at a time.

leave it to a demcorat to get upset that we're not taxing something that doesn't exist yet. Heller also fails to mention the half billion Keystone East application that has a fairly good chance of getting funded. In fact, it's probably the most well put together application for ARRA rail funding out there.

What are you complaining about? Come to NJ, home of horrible taxes, corruption and the worst business environment...and we can't even pump our own gas (something 48 states allow)

I agree. Under-tax the gas industry...but create a casino industry that creates lots of cost (policing, traffic, regulatory, bankruptcy, drunk driving, property crime). It's all about Rendell and his cronies. I predict his legacy will infamous.

the reason the state (taxpayers) hasn't received any stimulus money yet is cause the politicians haven't figured out how to steal it yet.

Next year we will have our chance? I voted today, how about the rest of you? Your chance to start was today.

North Dakota has state owned banks, flour mills etc? Isn't that what the Republicans claim is what's wrong with the legislation that Obama and friends have proposed? That Medical reform will become a State Owned entity? Talk about being phony.

If the writer was going to use a sports reference, why not say "Ryan Howard's salary for 8 games" ?

Margie Cason had just seen grandson Curtis Brinkley off when she felt dizzy. As she rested, the phone rang: Brinkley had just been shot.

Meanwhile, Brinkley was asking nurses: "Am I going to be able to play football again?" Brinkley, who still holds the city-league record for rushing, had just been signed by the Chargers.
