DUI is charged in hit-run that injured city cyclist

A bicyclist hit Friday night by a truck in Center City remained in critical condition yesterday at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

The charges against the 79-year-old man accused of hitting the female cyclist were upgraded to driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident. Initially he was charged with suspicion of driving under the influence. Neither his name nor the woman's was released by police.

The woman, believed to be in her 40s, was hit about 7:30 p.m. at 22d and Market Streets. SEPTA police stopped the truck at 22d and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. - Rita Giordano
