Hearing for accused in Piazza killings postponed

A court hearing scheduled yesterday for Will Hook, whom police describe as the mastermind behind the fatal June shootings at the Piazza at Schmidts in Northern Liberties, has been postponed until Tuesday.

The case has been transferred to Common Pleas Court Judge Benjamin Lerner, who oversees homicide cases.

Hook, 40, has been in custody since he surrendered July 13. He is one of seven people arrested in the killings of Rian Thal and Timothy Gilmore, who were gunned down in Thal's apartment building in what police have said was a drug robbery gone bad. Police said Thal, 34, was involved with dealing drugs. Gilmore, 40, was presumed to be her associate.

Hook's attorney, Christopher Warren, has said the case against his client is weak and that Hook should be released on bail. Police have said they have plenty of evidence against Hook. - Allison Steele

Meanwhile, Brinkley was asking nurses: "Am I going to be able to play football again?" Brinkley, who still holds the city-league record for rushing, had just been signed by the Chargers.
