Specter raises $1.73 million in second quarter

Sen. Arlen Specter (D., Pa.) raised $1.73 million in the second quarter of the year toward his reelection effort, amid attacks over his party switch from a probable challenger, his campaign said.

The haul leaves Specter with $7.5 million cash on hand entering the third fund-raising quarter - well more than Rep. Joe Sestak (D., Pa.), who wants to challenge Specter and reported raising just more than $1 million in the second quarter, for a total of about $4.3 million.

"Our impressive fund-raising . . . demonstrates the strong support I have in the Democratic Party and across Pennsylvania," Specter said in a statement. - Thomas Fitzgerald
