Authorities identify Poconos drowning victim

DINGMAN'S FERRY, Pa. - Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania have identified a New Jersey man who died Friday as he was trying to aid a distressed swimmer in a Pocono Mountains stream.

Venatesh Sankar, 27, of Jersey City, was swimming with friends about 2 p.m. Friday in a pool at the base of a waterfall on Adams Creek in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Pike County Coroner Kevin Stroyan said. Another member of the group began to struggle and Sankar tried to help but disappeared during the effort.

His body was recovered an hour later by a diver, a National Park Service spokeswoman said. Stroyan called the death "a tragic accident." - AP
