BARNEGAT LIGHT, N.J. - State officials are trying to trace the source of medical waste that washed ashore on an eight-mile stretch of Long Beach Island.
The debris was found Sunday on beaches from Barnegat Light to Surf City. However, the Long Beach Island Health Department did not release information about the incident until Wednesday because director Tim Hilferty says it was cleaned up by Monday morning.
Hilferty said the debris included syringes, wood, plastic, bottle caps, cell phone cases, ribbons, and balloons.
One beachgoer, Anne Leyden, of Cheltenham, said that she also saw syringes, catheters, medical tubing, test tubes, urine specimen bottles, condoms, and hazardous-waste bags.
The Environmental Protection Department said the washup did not appear to be major. - AP
