City Council yesterday approved a law requiring bicycle parking in all new buildings starting next year.
The law requires various levels of parking for nonresidential buildings of more than 7,500 square feet, public parking lots, buildings with at least 12 residential units, and facilities with six or more employees. The city has 2,600 bike racks.
"Buildings with well-designed and sufficient bicycle parking capacity send an important signal that green modes of transportation are valued and encouraged," said Sarah Clark Stuart of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia.
The bill was sponsored by Council Members Blondell Reynolds Brown, Curtis Jones Jr., and Jim Kenney. - Jeff Shields
