Emergency workers responding at 10 a.m. yesterday to a truck fire in Exton with the driver trapped inside found that the victim had been rescued, police said.
Ray Edward Showalter, 64, of Manheim, Lancaster County, had been pulled out of the burning vehicle in front of 316 Commerce Dr. by employees of Scogna Properties L.L.C., said West Whiteland Township Police Sgt. Martin Malloy.
Malloy said that an investigation was continuing, but that it appeared that Showalter suffered a stroke while behind the wheel. Showalter was unconscious and likely suffering from smoke inhalation, Malloy said. He was taken to Chester County Hospital, then transferred to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. A report on his condition was unavailable last night.
"How the fire started is unclear at this time, but what is clear is that the employees of Scogna Properties saved this man's life," said Malloy. Representatives of the company could not be reached for comment.
