New SEPTA commuter railcar to be on exhibit

SEPTA will unveil its new commuter railcar for public inspection tomorrow at Suburban Station. The prototype of a Silverliner V will be parked on Track O from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Oct. 16 to give riders a peek at their ride of the future.

SEPTA's general manager, Joseph Casey, will welcome the public during a noon ceremony tomorrow.

The first of 120 new Silverliners, purchased for $274 million, are scheduled to be in service in the fall of 2009. The railcars are to be assembled in a South Philadelphia factory by United Transit Systems, a consortium of South Korea's Hyundai Rotem Co. and Japan's Sojitz Corp. of America. - Paul Nussbaum
