Voorhees voters approve fire-station measures

In a rare August election with light turnout, Voorhees voters narrowly approved a $5.5 million bond issue Tuesday to replace one township fire station and upgrade the other.

For the owner of a house assessed at $300,000, the township average, the measure would increase property taxes $36 annually by midway through the 20-year bond issue.

It was approved, 264-242, said Bob Dougherty, chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners.

The new Kirkwood Firehouse will be built on the same spot as the old building on Burnt Mill Road. It is expected to be completed within two years, and Dougherty said he hoped it would attract new volunteers. - Matt Katz
