Three people were killed Monday afternoon in a fiery one-vehicle crash in Burlington County involving a stolen SUV, New Jersey State Police said.

It was originally reported that two people had died in the crash.

According to more detailed information released by New Jersey State Police Tuesday, troopers had been dispatched to the Pic-a-Lilli Inn on Route 206 in Shamong Township around noon Monday in response to a report of a stolen 1999 green GMC Yukon. While en route on southbound 206, the officers saw a car matching that description in the northbound lane.

The officers turned around to follow the SUV, the driver of which soon began speeding and driving erratically, police said. The car then drove off the road, hit a utility poll, and caught fire.

The victims' identities had not been released Tuesday afternoon. Police said the crash and the alleged vehicle theft were under investigation. No further details were available.
