South Carolina cop charged with murder has South Jersey ties

Michael Slager, the former North Charleston, S.C., police officer charged with killing a fleeing man, attended Lenape Regional High School in Medford and worked as waiter in Voorhees before entering the Coast Guard in 2003, according to his work application.

Slager, 33, joined the North Charleston police department in 2009 after serving six years in the Coast Guard.

His application, which was released by the police department, does not say when he graduated from high school, but the Burlington County Times reports that it was 2001 based on the school's yearbook.

Slager, who lived with his family in Mount Laurel at the time, worked as a waiter at Venturas in Voorhees before going into the Coast Guard in January 2003, according to the application.

In his last job with the Coast Guard, he served as a crew member on a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat based at Port Canaveral, Fla.

He applied to work for the North Charleston department in January 2009.

Slager, whose wife is eight months pregnant, was charged with murder in the death of Lamar Scott after a video showed the white uniformed officer firing on the black victim as he fled on foot after a road stop.
