Record rain hits parts of New Jersey

Heavy rain swept through parts of New Jersey overnight, causing some flooding and record and near-record rainfall totals.

Nearly 9 inches of rain were recorded at the Millville Airport in Cumberland County, according to preliminary National Weather Service figures.

The 8.94 inches was the second-highest rainfall total ever in Millville since records started being kept in 1947, the weather service said. Some street flooding was reported in the area after the heavy rain.

In Atlantic City, the 4.41 inches of rain that fell before midnight set a daily rainfall record for Aug. 12. The previous record for that date at the Atlantic City Airport was 3.13 inches, set in 1901.

Including rain that fell early this morning, a total of 5.58 inches were recorded in Atlantic City, according to the weather service.

The heavy rain also forced the eastbound lanes of the Causeway Bridge in Manahawkin to close for a time, leading to delays for travelers headed to and from Long Beach Island.

-Point Pleasant, Ocean County: 5.9 inches
-Manasquan, Monmouth County: 5.83 inches
-Brick Township: 5.4 inches
-Franklin Township, Gloucester County: 5.19 inches
-Chatsworth, Burlington County: 4.76 inches
