N.J. team wins Little League Softball World Series

The Taney Dragons aren't the only Little League team in the region playing well in the postseason.

A squad from New Jersey won the Little League Softball World Series on Wednesday night.

The players from Robbinsville, Mercer County, defeated a team from Bossier, La., 4-1, to clinch the championship in Portland, Ore.

The win was the first world series title for Robbinsville, which pulled ahead early in the game with four first-inning runs. The team finished third in last year's contest.

"We are extremely proud of this team," Robbinsville Mayor Dave Fried said in a statement. "They have represented our town like the champions they are, and for a small town such as ours to consistently develop good, talented kids with such big hearts is a testament to both the Robbinsville Little League and their parents."

Other state and local officials also congratulated the team.

"Great job, Robbinsville!" State Sen. Tom Kean posted on Twitter.

"Amazing job girls! Congratulations to all" Gov. Chris Christie tweeted. "You make NJ proud."

Over the course of the tournament, Robbinsville outscored its opponents 41-4.

Coach Scott Veisz told NJ.com that team took the tournament one game at a time.

"At this point, they are fully aware of what they should do and we just polish those skills to get them ready for the game," he said before the championship game. "Nothing fancy at this point."

Pitcher MacKenzie Medders told the Trentonian that she had been "nervous at first."

"I knew this was the last time I was going to pitch in Little League and because we didn't win last year," she said.

The Center City-based Taney team will play its first game of the Little League World Series on Friday afternoon in Williamsport.
