Man shot dead in Trenton's Chambersburg section sets ignominious record

A man found shot this afternoon in front of a well-known bakery in the Chambersburg section of Trenton, N.J., reportedly died shortly after police found him.

The unidentified victim became the state capital's 32nd homicide of 2013, which through eight months already eclipses the troubled city's modern day record of 31 homicides set in 2005.

The shooting happened at about 12:30 p.m. on Butler Street in front of Italian People's Bakery, one of the few holdouts from Chambersburg heyday as one of the country's most well-known Italian American neighborhoods. The bakery's origins go back to 1936 when its first owner opened a store on nearby Hamilton Avenue.

Police were reportedly looking for two men who fled in a red vehicle toward Hamilton Avenue, according to the Breaking News Network. The Times of Trenton reported on its website that the suspects fled on foot. Witnesses told the newspaper that the man appeared to be shot multiple times.

A message left for a spokesman for the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office was not immediately returned.
