Man charged in Camden shooting death

A man has been charged with shooting another man to death in Camden.

The Camden County Prosecutor's Office said today that 26-year-old Clifford Stevens was taken into custody Wednesday in the Feb. 18 killing of William Colbert, 28.

Colbert was found fatally shot near 16th and Pierce streets at about 9 a.m. that day.

Prosecutors say Stevens shot Colbert, then fled in a silver Chevrolet Malibu that had been rented in Colbert's name.

A few minutes later, Stevens crashed the car near 27th and Harrison streets and ran from the crash site. A witness identified Stevens as the driver and saw that he had two firearms, prosecutors said.

Police found Stevens hiding in the backyard of an abandoned property a block away, on the 1200 block of North 28th Street. He was carrying a Glock .40 caliber handgun and Colbert's cellphone, authorities said.

Camden has recorded nine homicides so far this year, including one today.
