Giraffe born at Six Flags Great Adventure

Visitors to Six Flags Great Adventure will be able to see the park's latest attraction this weekend -- a baby giraffe.

Park officials said Mika was born Oct. 11.

The female reticulated giraffe is the first calf for mom Noel.

Mika first ventured outside the Jackson, N.J., theme park's giraffe barn on Oct. 21. Great Adventure visitors will be able to see her during the park's closing weekend, which is this Saturday and Sunday, and during the Grape Adventure Wine Festival Safari tours the following weekend.

"Noel is a great mom," Jason Holloway, a safari supervisor who oversees the giraffe herd, said in a statement. "She began nursing right away."

Holloway also said that Mika, who is "healthy and doing very well," stood up within an hour of her birth. She measured 5 feet 10 inches tall.

Reticulated giraffes, also known as Somali giraffes, are native to northeastern Kenya, southern Ethiopia and Somalia.
