A firefighter was injured Friday afternoon while battling a blaze at a South Jersey apartment complex.

Police responded to the Millbridge Garden Apartments, where they found flames and heavy smoke coming from a second-floor unit. Officers went door-to-door and evacuated 16 apartments.

Personnel from the Chews Landing, Blackwood, Lindenwold, Runnemede, Lambs Terrace and Deptford fire departments arrived and quickly wrestled the flames under control.

One firefighter suffered a knee injury and was rushed to Virtua Hospital in Voorhees. Police said he's expected to be treated and released.

All but two residents were allowed to return to their homes Friday night. The two units that remained evacuated sustained fire, smoke and water damage, according to police.

The apartment complex's management placed the two displaced residents in alternate housing.

The Chews Landing Fire Marshals office and the Gloucester Township Police Department are investigating the cause of the blaze.
