Camden man charged with shooting Trenton taxi driver in Burlington County

A Camden, N.J., man was charged Tuesday with killing a Trenton cab driver in Burlington City about two weeks ago, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.

Carey L. Coleman Jr., 22, allegedly shot cabbie Larry Hamilton once in the back of the head, which caused Hamilton to crash into a utility pole June 16 on Route 130, the prosecutor's office said.

A motive for the shooting was not released.

Video surveillance footage allegedly shows Coleman getting into Hamilton's taxi at Trenton Transit Center at about 1 a.m. A short time later, Burlington City police responded to a crash on the northbound side of Route 130 at the intersection with York Street. Officers found Hamilton dead inside the vehicle.

"An autopsy performed by Burlington County Medical Examiner Dr. Ian Hood concluded that Hamilton died as the result of a single gunshot to the head," the county prosecutor's office said in a statement. "The weapon, a .32 caliber handgun, was recovered at the home of the suspect's girlfriend."

Coleman, of South Ninth Street in Camden, was arrested Monday at a relative's house in Woodbury. He is being held on $500,000 bail and will appear in Superior Court later this afternoon. He is charged with one count of first-degree murder.
