Two men were slain in Camden in separate shootings Thursday, authorities said.

The first happened around 2:30 a.m. at the Chestnut Court Apartments near Seventh and Chestnut Streets, where police found Jherell Bailey, 34, of Camden, shot multiple times. He was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The second homicide occurred around 8:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Berkley Street, where police found Herbert Thomas, 18, of Camden. He was also pronounced dead at Cooper.

The city has had 37 homicides this year, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. Last year, 32 people were killed.

The apartment complex where Bailey was shot and the surrounding area have had trouble in the past.

In April 2014, police exchanged gunfire at the complex with a 28-year-old man, James Dickerson, whom officers shot in a leg.

Two months later, Xavier Ingram, 21, became paralyzed during a foot chase with officers near the complex, where Ingram lived. Police said Ingram had a handgun and that video footage showed him slipping on wet pavement. Ingram's family accused officers of beating him.

Anyone with information on Thomas' case may call Prosecutor's Office Detective Michael Rhoads at 856-225-8561 or Camden County Police Detective Michael Ross at 856-757-7420.

Anyone with information on Bailey's case should call Prosecutor's Office Detective Jason Rowello at 856-225-8475 or Police Detective Shawn Donlon at 856-757-7420.
