RV carrying weed-laced edibles up in smoke on Delaware Memorial Bridge

An RV carrying weed-laced edibles got totally baked Sunday night when it caught fire on the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

The RV belonged to Weed World Candies, a New York City-based company that had sent the van, and five employees, on a college tour from Washington to Philadelphia, said the business' CEO, who identified himself as Dr. Dro.

He said he did not know what started the fire, but he added that it appeared to have been due to a mechanical problem. No one in the vehicle was hurt, he said.

The Delaware River & Bay Authority, which administers the bridge between Delaware and New Jersey, reported lanes closed because of a vehicle fire about 6 p.m. The blaze closed lanes, clogged traffic, and spewed a plume of thick black smoke from the bridge's northbound lanes as it consumed the Ford RV.

Four fire companies responded to the blaze, according to the Delaware Memorial Bridge Twitter feed, and the fire was reported out at 7:05 p.m. More than an hour later traffic was still moving slowly because of clean-up efforts.

Weed World Candies has been operating for about 15 years, selling products laced with marijuana, Dro said.

"We have lollipops, brownies, ice cream, popcorn," he said, "an assortment of different edibles."

The interrupted college tour was part of an effort to promote decriminalization of marijuana, Dro said. He said the items in the RV were valued at $50,000 to $60,000.

Almost exactly a year ago, on Oct. 7, 2015, another Weed World Candies vehicle caught fire at a concert in Madison, Wis. The timing is just a coincidence, Dro said.

"People asked if there was some kind of ritual we do around this time of year where we sacrifice a vehicle," he said. "I said, 'Hell no, man!' "
