A 32-year-old South Jersey man has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty after admitting he used a bow and arrow to kill two kittens belonging to his former girlfriend, police said.

Responding officers found one dead kitten in the backyard of the woman's home on Adalisa Avenue in Greenwich Township, Gloucester County, township police said Thursday. They found the other in the refrigerator.

Timothy Cain was still living in the house even though he and the woman had ended their relationship, Lt. William Leash said. The woman called police Wednesday after Cain killed the kittens, Leash said.

Cain admitted killing the kittens, saying he was tired of having so many cats in the house, Leash said.

Several other felines at the house were not harmed. Police also found the bow and arrow in the house.

Cain was arrested and charged with animal cruelty, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, and harassment. He was taken to the Salem County Jail, where Greenwich Township sends some of inmates. Bail was set at $7,500.

The woman has obtained a restraining order, Leash said.
