A female driver was killed in a fiery crash in Salem County Friday morning after her car slammed into an electric pole.

The accident happened about 7:20 a.m. on N.J. Highway 77 near Garrison Road in Elmer.

The driver, who was not identified because her family has yet to be notified, was driving north when her silver Nissan Altima crashed into an electric pole and then went up in flames, said Trooper Lawrence Peele, a New Jersey State Police spokesman. The utility pole snapped in half from the impact.

The driver, who was the only person inside, could not get out of the car as it was engulfed in flames, Peele said. She was declared dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Peele said police did not yet know why the woman veered off the road.
