Four New Jersey State troopers on Monday helped deliver a baby girl on the side of the Turnpike after the mother's water unexpectedly broke, police said.

The birth occurred around 2:45 p.m. at milepost 106.5 in Newark. The woman and her husband, both from New York City, called 911 and pulled over there. They had been headed to a doctor's appointment, police said.

Trooper Robert Ravotto wrapped the baby in a blanket, preventing the child from going into shock in the cold weather, and cleared her airway, police said. Det. I Jason Kazan, Det. Robert Kilmurray and Trooper II Robert Ciecwicz also assisted.

The mother and her daughter were taken to University Medical Center in Newark, where they are doing well, state police said. - Michael Boren
