Police officers in Ocean County fatally shot a man who threatened to create a disturbance over the weekend.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said officers were dispatched to a home on Cherry Wood Circle in Brick Township after a male caller said he would create an unspecified type of disturbance, then immediately hung up.

When the officers arrived at the home shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday, a man approached them from the residence, armed with what appeared to be a black handgun, prosecutors said.

The officers discharged their guns after the man didn't obey orders to drop the weapon, according to prosecutors.

The man was hit several times, and died from his injuries.

Officials didn't say how many officers were involved in the incident or how many shots were fired. The prosecutor's office also didn't release the names of the officers involved.

The deceased man's name wasn't released because family members are still being notified. Authorities described him only as a white male.

Prosecutors said the incident remains under investigation.
