N.J. SWAT team kills man holding child hostage

A SWAT team in Monmouth County shot and killed a man who they say had a knife and was holding his infant son hostage, authorities said.

A SWAT team in Monmouth County shot and killed a man who they say had a knife and was holding his infant son hostage, authorities said.

Scott McAllister, 39, was shot Wednesday morning by a member of the Monmouth County Emergency Response Team, which stormed his Middletown Township home after several hours of unsuccessful negotiations. Inside the home was McAllister's 17-month-old son, who was not harmed, authorities said.

Police initially responded to the home around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a 911 call about a domestic dispute. The child's mother, who had fled by the time officers arrived, told them that McAllister had beaten her and that he had a knife, authorities said.

Police initially could not enter the home because McAllister had locked the doors, authorities said. A hostage negotiator was also unable to persuade him to surrender.

The SWAT team then went into the home around 4:30 a.m. The New Jersey Attorney General's Office said McAllister was "believed to have been armed with a knife" when he was shot.

The Attorney General's Office said Wednesday its shooting response team was investigating the incident because it involved a county emergency response unit.
