Camden to get second supermarket

CAMDEN - A PriceRite is coming to Camden, making it the second chain supermarket slated for the city since the last one closed in July 2013, officials announced Wednesday.

CAMDEN - A PriceRite is coming to Camden, making it the second chain supermarket slated for the city since the last one closed in July 2013, officials announced Wednesday.

The PriceRite is slated to open in November in the building formerly occupied by the last supermarket, a Pathmark on Mount Ephraim Avenue.

Mayor Redd made the announcement along with State Sen. Donald Norcross and Jason Ravitz, of Ravitz Family Market, at City Hall.

The PriceRite is expected to create 80 to 100 jobs, a city spokesman said.

The Ravitz family is also planning to operate a ShopRite being constructed on Admiral Wilson Boulevard across from the Cooper River. The Ravitz family operates five other ShopRites in New Jersey.

The Goldenberg Group, of Blue Bell, is the developer of the ShopRite, which officials have said could create 400 construction jobs and 320 full and part time grocery jobs.

Much of the city has been labeled a food desert by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, given its lack of supermarkets and access to fresh produce.
