Inmate, 23, found dead in county jail
Camden County authorities are investigating the death of a 23-year-old Camden woman found dead in her jail cell early Saturday. Evelina Hereria was found in her cell at the Camden County Jail around 3:20 a.m. Saturday, Camden County spokesman Daniel Keashen said.
An autopsy was performed and the findings are pending the return of toxicology results, said the spokesman for the county prosecutor's office, Jason Laughlin. An investigator from the prosecutor's office has also been assigned to the case.
Hereria has a young daughter and was arrested on a charge of violating probation, according to Angel Cordero, a community activist speaking for the family. Hereria was a 2010 graduate of Cordero's Community Education Resource Network program, an alternative education certification program for high school dropouts.
He said she went on to graduate from the Harris School of Business in Cherry Hill. "She was a very smart young girl, very dear to us. Very bright and loving," Cordero said Tuesday.
Cordero said the family is frustrated they haven't gotten information about how Hereria died and will be staging a rally following her burial on Friday. "The whole family is so devastated . . . they want to know what happened here."
