Couple charged with chaining boy to radiator
A woman and her boyfriend have been arrested and charged with chaining her 10-year-old son to a radiator "day and night" for two weeks in their Camden home, Camden County Police said.
Police said in a statement that events started to unfold about 3:35 p.m. Monday when Florence M. Pollard, 31, of the 2700 block of Cramer Street, called to report her son, identified only as M.P., had run away.
Officers found the boy nearby and he told them about being chained to the radiator in his mother's room as punishment and occasionally being handcuffed with plastic restraints, according the statement.
Police said they searched the home and found the chain and lock used to hold the boy.
"This level of depravity inflicted upon a child is chilling," County Police Chief J. Scott Thomson said in the statement. "We're just thankful that the child had an opportunity to escape and report what has been going on so we could arrest this couple and put a stop to their cruelty."
Pollard and Brian L. Craig, 29, of Blackwood, are charged endangering the welfare of a child, and criminal restraint. They were jailed with bail set at $50,000 each.
M.P. and five siblings - two sisters and three brothers ranging in age from 11 to 7 months - have been placed in the custody of the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency, police said, adding Craig is the natural father of the only the youngest child.
Authorities are continuing to investigate, police said.
