Trenton mayor talks about probe

TRENTON - Mayor Tony Mack emerged in public Monday for the first time in nearly two weeks and said he was under questioning by the FBI.

TRENTON - Mayor Tony Mack emerged in public Monday for the first time in nearly two weeks and said he was under questioning by the FBI.

However, Mack deflected questions about what the FBI is trying to learn and whether he believes he could be charged with any crime.

City Hall and the homes of Mack, his brother, and a campaign donor were raided this month. Documents obtained by the Trenton Times showed investigators were trying to find evidence dealing with fraud, extortion, money laundering, and city contracts.

Just after the raids, Mack vanished. He later said he was on vacation.

Wearing a suit and tie and a wide grin on Monday, he made his first public appearance since the raids, emerging to cut the ribbon on a learning center being opened in a shuttered library building.

Nearly all the questions he received, though, were about the FBI. He said the city is providing answers to law enforcement's questions.

"If people are making mistakes and someone has information about it, we need to know," he said.

Mack, 46, said he could not say what investigators wanted and ignored questions about whether he had hired or lawyer or been told he could face charges.
