New sheriff's officers include laid-off cops

Some of the Camden police officers laid off a year ago are back to work in local law enforcement, but in a different department.

Camden County Sheriff Charles Billingham last week swore in 20 new sheriff's officers. Among those hired, besides the former Camden police, were laid-off officers from Collingswood and Newark, he said in a statement Monday.

The new hires include women and veterans, and its diversity is representative of the population of Camden County, Billingham said.

The news release said the sheriff's department used the state's civil service list to recruit military combat veterans who had served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Somalia, Bosnia, and Croatia. - Claudia Vargas
