Ex-congressman Adler undergoes heart surgery

Former U.S. Rep. John Adler had "emergency heart surgery after contracting staph bacterial endocarditis," according to a statement from his current employer, Greenberg Traurig, a national law firm with offices in Florham Park.

Adler, 51, of Cherry Hill, joined the firm earlier this year after losing his congressional seat to U.S. Rep. Jon Runyan (R., N.J.), a former Eagles' tackle.

The statement, released by Greenberg Traurig communications director Lourdes Brezo-Martinez, said Adler "is recuperating in the hospital in the company of his family. At this time, Mr. Adler and his family request that their wishes for privacy be respected. Thank you for all your good wishes and show of friendship and support."

The firm declined to say when or where Adler had the surgery.

Adler won the 3rd District House seat in 2008. He was the first Democrat in decades to win the district, which covers much of Burlington and Ocean counties and includes Cherry Hill in Camden County.

He served as state senator between 1992 and 2008 and had been a member of the Cherry Hill township council.
