Christie vows to work against gay marriage

Republican Christopher J. Christie said that if is elected New Jersey governor next month, he would do all he could to block the state from allowing gay marriage.

Lawmakers have said they expect the issue to be brought up shortly after the Nov. 3 election. Democratic Gov. Corzine has said he would sign a law making New Jersey one of a handful of states to recognize same-sex marriage.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Christie said he supported civil unions, which offer the legal benefits but not the name of marriage, for same-sex couples. Civil unions have been offered since 2007.

Should lawmakers pass a gay-marriage bill, Christie said he would support amending the state's Constitution to ban the practice. - AP
