Clinton, Bush speak to Urban League

The heavyweights of the crowded 2016 presidential field, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Jeb Bush, laid out starkly different visions Friday for uplifting the plight of blacks in America, as the two appeared at the same event for the first time since they announced their runs for office.

Each came to the National Urban League conference in Fort Lauderdale to sway a crucial voting segment.

Overshadowing the event was the sustained racial unrest, sparked by the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Florida and propelled by rioting in Ferguson, Mo., and Baltimore as well as the deadly rampage at a South Carolina church.

Clinton forcefully confronted those issues and the national protest that has resulted. Bush was more subdued, presenting a conservative agenda he vows would empower inner-city minorities. - Tribune Washington Bureau

A federal judge has blocked the release of any recordings made at meetings of abortion providers by an antiabortion group that previously revealed secretly recorded videos of a Planned Parenthood leader. Judge William Orrick in San Francisco issued a temporary restraining order Friday against the Center for Medical Progress hours after the order was requested by the National Abortion Federation. - AP

Skydiving record

Traveling at speeds of up to 240 m.p.h., 164 skydivers flying head-down built the largest ever vertical skydiving formation Friday. It took the international team 13 attempts to beat the 2012 mark set by 138 skydivers. The formation, resembling a flower, floated above the drop zone in Ottawa, Ill., for a few seconds before the fliers broke away, deployed parachutes, and whooped and hollered their way to the ground to the jubilation of spectators. - AP
