GERMANY

Abuse of refugees depicted

Chancellor Angela Merkel's government condemned possible abuses against refugees at German shelters after photos and videos surfaced reminiscent of maltreatment at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison.

"If it's true that refugees were abused and humiliated there, then these would be repulsive acts," Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert said. "We are a humane country, and Germany respects human dignity. That must also be true for the accommodation of refugee and asylum seekers."

Police are investigating at least six security guards in North Rhine-Westphalia. Media showed a photo of a guard with his foot on the neck of a bound refugee and a video of an asylum-seeker being forced to sit on a vomit-covered mattress. - Bloomberg
