3 dead and 12 hurt
in Ariz. dust storm
Three people were killed and at least 12 injured after
a dust storm led to multiple crashes Tuesday on I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson, authorities said.
State Department of Public Safety officials said 19 vehicles, including at least six big rigs, were involved in chain-reaction crashes south of Casa Grande shortly after noon.
TV footage showed several cars and tractor-trailers smashed into one another near Picacho Peak in south-central Arizona.
The area is prone to dust storms that develop suddenly and can quickly reduce visibility to zero for drivers.
The National Weather Service had issued a blowing- dust advisory shortly before the crashes, with wind gusts of up to 30 m.p.h. in the area.
A DPS spokesman said Tuesday's chain-reaction accidents were the worst in that area in seven years. - AP
