Man breaks legs hiding from police in trash compactor

A man attempting to flee New Jersey police by hiding in a commercial trash compactor suffered compound fractures of both his legs.

Jersey City police responded to a report of a man with a knife attempting to break into cars in the Newport section of the city about 10 a.m. Monday, NJ.com reported.

The unidentified man took off into one of the nearby high-rise apartments along River Drive. When police caught up with him, he was howling in pain. It was not known if the injuries occurred as a result of the man’s fall into the trash chute or if the compactor went into operation and crushed his legs, the story reported.

The alleged thief, who was arrested, could still be heard screaming in pain as he was treated in an ambulance, the story reported.
