Jackpots: $200 million won; doc claims $101 million

Last week ended with big news about a couple of big jackpots.

On Thursday, William Steele, an Orlando, Fla., physician, claimed the Oct. 3 Powerball jackpot, opting for the $101 million cash payout - before taxes, of course - instead of $189 million in 30 yearly installments.

Friday night, a single ticket sold in Shenandoah, Va., hit the $200 million jackpot in Mega Millions, the other major multistate lottery.

Those wins mean, of course, smaller jackpots this week. Mega Millions will be $12 million tonight, and Powerball, which rolled over Saturday night, has $25 million up for grabs.

New Jersey and Pennsylvania, though, landed a couple of windfalls this weekend.

In Mega Millions, Jersey sold one of the 17 nationwide that won $250,000 for matching the first five numbers - 10, 13, 18, 33 and 51 - but not the Mega Ball of 43. New York had six such winners, Michigan had three, and Ohio and Texas had two apiece, while California, Georgia and Illinois each had one.

Powerball produced a $1 million winner in Louisiana, whose ticket missed the Powerball of 39 but matched the first five numbers - 5, 16, 25, 30 and 49 - while having the Power Play multiplier option.

Pennsylvania had one of the seven tickets that won $200,000 for having the first five numbers but not the Power Play. The others were in Florida, Kansas, Missouri, North Carolina, Oregon and Tennessee.

Steele, who bought his ticket at a Chevron gas station, said he'd donate a lot of money to charity and would continue practicing dermatology "if the public will let me."

Steele apparently was away when he found out he'd won, because he said he called his wife - inspirational writer and speaker Frankie Summers-Steele - at 4 a.m. on a Sunday morning to tell her the news.

He asked her if she loved him. After he said he'd won, she said, "Go back to sleep."

The Phillies appear to have settled on a replacement for veteran utilityman Eric Bruntlett. The organization has agreed in principle on a 1-year major league deal with longtime reserve infielder Juan Castro, according to a source familiar with talks between the sides.
